Dog Days of Summer 2013

It's been a good summer for me, teaching math at SOU, running in a lot of beautiful places, and spending time with Arlene and my son Toby! Yeah, summer is a great time of year. Do you have a story to share about your summer? Post it and let's hear what everyone has been doing! Peace and Light,

  1. Hello everyone! Hope you are having a great last weeks of summer vacation! I just had an awesome run around Mt. Rainier the other other day. Running is so special for me and to be able to run in the shadow of a great mountain was amazing. I feel so lucky to be a runner in such a great a beautiful area.

  2. Hi soon to be 5th graders!!!!!!!!!!
I had an awesome summer! Before school ended I found out that I made it to the competitive soccer team!
    Las Vegas:
We went to LAS VEGAS!!!!!!! It was a short flight. The airport food is not cheap! Las Vegas didn't feel like Vegas. It felt like we have been here before! The airport was huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It had a flat escalator that you can acutaly walk on! It was past midnight when we got to our peaceful hotel called the CanCun resort. It had 4 water slides and a waterfall! I went there everyday! On a Friday we moved hotels to the Hilton Grand Vacations. After we got settled in my Dad told me to get dressed up. I got a pink dress and put it on. I got on some matching sandels. I knew that Justin Bieber was going to play at MGM, so did my parents. They told me that we could go to the MGM but couldn't watch him. We walked to the monorail. It was so long and it was a little over 100 degrees. We finally got there. It took a while. When we got to MGM finally we went down to where you enter for concerts. I kept asking, "Can I have this, can I that?" I didn't know something. My dad turned around and got 4 peices of paper out of his pocket. Then it happened. I said, "What is this?" I looked closley. Justin Bieber was written on the top. "OH MY GOSH! YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME!!!" I started crying. My dad got out some $, got a book about Justin, and got a flashing light. We went in. It wasn't until 9:40 Justin came out. There were 2 preacts. All I can say about the concert is that it was/is my dream to have an AWESOME time at a concert. I got a perfect pink shirt that had all of his summer tour on the back. Next night; Dad told us that our Uncle told him to go to the Mirage. We did. First we went to a Buffet. When Alexa (my sister) went to get some more food I asked Dad, "Seriously, are we going to the Love concert tonight?" (My family loves the Beatles) "No", he replyed. Alexa came back. Mom came. "Where should I eat?" she asked. I shruged. She left again. After Dessert we found Mom gambiling. She apperently won alot of $$. Yay! We got in line for the Love show. It is dedicated for the Beatles. "I knew it." I said as dad got out our ticket and handed them to us. It was awesome when the show started. In the middle they stoped the show for electricity. I think it was because that same night a lady fell 50 ft. in another show she didn't survive. I still couldn't beleive it on the plane.

    See all of you later!!!!!!!!

  3. Hi everybody!
Today is a special day for me because today is my birthday! I am now 11 years old. I have done so many cool things this summer! I went to a summer camp all the way in Portland. It was how to write my own computer animated story (I have done a lot of summer camps.) I also went to a summer camp to create my own video game. I play it all the time, and someone told me it's the best video game ever! I don't know if anyone cares but I now have some of the most awesome Mega Man figures EVER! Also one time I went to the 4th of July parade. When it ended they had a big party with many different activities, and my favorite was bingo because by the time it was done, i walked out with $19! That isn't everything I did this summer, but that's all I can fit for now. I had a great summer, and I hope you did too!

    See you when school starts.
    Sincerely Jordan

    Hi everyone.

I did a tons of things this summer and this is just half of what we did!

I fished in 4 bodies of water: Rogue, Hyatt Lake, North Umpqua and the Applegate River. We swam in 8 bodies of water: Pacific Ocean, Chetco River, Smith River, Illinois River, Layng Creek, Rogue River, Applegate River, and Emigrant Lake. We went camping 4 times. My favorite thing was catching fish on the Chetco. Just little ones using our scoop nets. I caught about 100 little fish, 2-3 inches long, baby trout and salmon). I also caught some bottom feeders that looked like from the catfish family.

I also caught tons of salamanders on the Chetco and also at a little mountain lake called Crawfish Lake...I don't know why they called it Crawfish Lake because there wasn't a single crawfish but hundreds of salamanders!

All together this summer, I caught 10 trout about 6 inches long. 5 with my flyrod and 4 with my spin rod. The biggest one was in the Applegate River and according to Joe Jarvis, was about the size of your average steelhead ... it was landed when it came of the hook and swam away!

I had a really great summer and I hope next summer is just as good. p.s. I am going to stay in a yurt at the Chetco River again in one week!

    See you soon! Dawson

  8. Hey guys!
What's up? Last week I was in Eagle Crest resort near Redmond, Oregon. The condo that stayed in was really nice. We could see the Deschutes River right out the back door. We went swimming every day! One of my highlights was Smith Rock. It's a world famous climbing spot. The view itself was amazing. But the 4 mile hike was too! The first trail was called Misery Ridge Loop Trail. They call that for a reason because all the way to the top, it's hard core uphill. Also it's SUPER dry. Once you get to the top, it’s the most amazing view! We stayed there for a bit to catch our breath, then went on to the Monkey Face Trail. This trail was hard too because it was steep downhill and lots of loose rock. Then we saw it. Monkey Face Rock. It looked like it had a really long neck and a monkey face on the top. We saw a park ranger and he told us that in the 80’s, it was the hardest climb in the world! 5.14 c. The most that you can go to is 5.15 c! So it was pretty cool. After that, my mom and I looked for the perfect place for a dip in the river. It took FOREVER! Because I kept asking “What about here?”
    “no”
    “How about here”
    “Hm no”
    “Here?”
    “No”
So it went on like that for a while. Then we found the perfect place to jump in the Crooked River! We got in right away. After that we dried off a little then hiked back to the car. It was an amazing experience for my family. I’ll send pictures soon!

    See y’all soon!
    Allie

I had so much fun at the Redding Water Slids.
    I really recommend going there.

    Sincerely Caden :D

  11. My trip to the Oregon dunes.
Hi my name is john and I am 10, my birthday is October 18. Some family calls me the rock but I don’t know why. I like to play FUN games like Uno, monopoly and tag. I have moved to many places but finally we rested upon Ashland.
So I went to my dad’s this summer he lives in Chehalis Washington Me my dad, his girlfriend, her son and a ton of family took our quads to the Oregon dunes which was a 6 hour trip to get there. We set up our tents and unpacked all our camping gear. Later we went riding and let me tell you it was FUN!. After 3 days we went and packed up and left I had a fun time I wish I can do it again.
So what I am looking forward to this year is not much, just a trip to the coast, some field trips and fun things in class. So thank you for reading my story so see ya next time.

  13. I love animals! i have two dogs and one cat. my dogs names are Lucy and Basil. Lucy is a Australian shepherd black lab. She is 9 years old but still pretty energized. My second dog Basil is a Australian Shepherd, Minnie Aussie. She's a handful because she is so energized and happy. Whenever you put your face up to your mouth she will kiss you like crazy.

My third and final animal was Xena. She is a warrior princess. She is calm but very outgoing. I got her on my 7th birthday. My dad only got Xena because she was calm, but while we were signing the papers she was attacking her brother!

    so that's my animals!

    love,
    Cammie

  14. Hi guys,

My name is Asa. I live in Ashland Oregon and I am in Mark Sherbow's 5th grade class. I love dogs and cats, especially pit-bulls. We used to have two dogs, one was a pit-bull, and one is a Chihuahua pit-bull mix (weird right?). Why I say, used to have two dogs is because we re-homed Alice, the pit-bull. She needed too much exercise!

This summer I went to Hawaii and Canada. But today I am going to be telling you about my trip to Hawaii, or at least the highlights. My favorite part of the trip was when I was on the beach enjoying a nice root-beer lime snow-cone, yum!! Then suddenly, I heard my step-sister Ava shout, "Sea Turtle!". I put my snow-cone down and put on my snorkel gear as fast as I could (which is pretty fast!). So I jumped in the water and I instantly saw the sea turtle with it's big eyes and hexagon patterned shell. For what seemed like hours I swam with the sea turtle, even underneath it. But then it was time to go back to our hotel.

So there is the highlights of my trip I really recommend going there!!

    Sincerely Asa :)a

  15. Getting Paul McCartney tickets!!!!

Hi. My name is Milan. I am 10 yrs. old and was born in Portland, Oregon on February 6th, 2003. I have a 12 (soon to be 13) year old sister named Alexa. My mom and dad's names are Ann and Rob. They are the best parents EVER! Now to my story.

Once upon a time my family and I were in our hotel lobby in Seattle. My mom and dad said we were going to a Baseball game at The Safeco field. The concierge at the hotel told us how to get to Safeco field. He said, "Have fun at the concert!" Thats when it hit me. I knew it either had to be Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, or a fake Beatle concert because dad whispered, "Its a surprise for your sister." Once we got there we saw thousands of people wearing Paul McCartney T-shirts. Sir Paul sang for 3 1/2 hours! All I can say is that the concert was awesome and I got an amazing T-shirt!

I can't wait until we go to Bandon!!!!! It is so close but, yet so far away! See you all at school!

    Sincerely,
    Milan

  17. My summer!!
Hi, my name is Isaac I am going to tell you about my summer.
This summer I did a lot of stuff but I am going to tell you about two things. This summer I went paint-balling for the first time. It was fun. I was a good shot and I nailed my friend's gun. Peter, my uncle had never been shot before and I shot him. The second thing I want to tell you is that I went tubing on a lake by a cabin. I was the only one who held on tight enough to not fall off once. That was my summer. How was yours?

    Sincerely,
    Isaac

  19. Hello! My name is Joe.

This summer I went backpacking with my dad and my best friend, Sayler. We went backpacking at the heavenly twin lakes. When we got to the trail head we loaded up our backpacks and put them on our backs and mine weighed like fifty million pounds. We started on the three mile hike.

When we finally got up there we started to look for a campsite. One spot was too close to the lake. We followed one trail that had easy access to the water, logs for sitting around a campsite, and was perfect for our campsite. We started to set up our camp. Well, my dad did most of it. We went down to the lake and started fishing right away. We didn't catch any fish. After that we made a fire for dinner and had hotdogs and baked beans.

We did some more fishing, played cards and looked at the stars. We told stories by the campfire and then went to bed. We woke up the next morning and made breakfast. We had oatmeal, hot cocoa and apples. We fished some more for fun and then took our campsite down and packed up. We headed back to the car, drank some sodas and headed home.

It was a lot of fun! Sayler and I had a great time, and we would definitely do it all over again.

  20. Hello! My name is Anissa.

This summer I went to Six Flags! I went with my dad and my dad's girlfriend. We drove there from Sacramento. It was about an hour drive. Our first ride was Superman roller coaster. My dad and I got to sit in the front and the ride went upside down! I was freaking out! But I had a lot of fun.

My favorite ride was the Madusa roller coaster. People who had flipflops had to take them off and put them away, because the ride is made so that your feet dangle the whole time. It went upside down, and twisted around, and went 63 miles per hour! It was so fun!

We went on a lot of other rides, got cotton candy, and got to see a dolphin show. My favorite part of the show was when a girl went on a trapeze over the tops of the dolphins and they did flips.

The sun went down and we had to leave around nine thirty in the evening. I fell asleep on the car ride home. It was a great trip and I would go back again and again.

  21. Hello! My name is Gabe.

I went to the Redding Water Slides this summer. I rode there with my friend David and his dad. It was about a two hour drive. When we first got there we went in the Lazy Lagoon. And then we went on the three regular water slides. My favorite ride was the Cyclone. The Cyclone is a long tube that you go down on an innertube and then it shoots you into a large bowl where you spin around and around. Kind of like a toilet. Then you fall through the hole in the middle and land in a big pool.

We also went on a ride called the Raging River. It looked just like a river and you go on an inner tube. There were a lot of rapids! And then it shoots you into a pool on the bottom.

We stayed until about five thirty and then we headed home. It was one of my most favorite memories of the summer.

  22. Hello, my name is Kane.

This summer I met someone who had the same name as I do. It was spelled the same way! I was in Eugene with my mom, and this guy was selling us crab. We have bought crab from this guy for years! The guy had to wear a name tag because the seasons were changing, and I noticed his name tag said "Kane".

I told him that we both have the same name spelled the same way. He said that was amazing and that "Kane" was a pretty awesome and rare name.

It was weird because I have met people with my name, but it was never spelt the same way. It was pretty cool. :o)

  23. Hello. My name is Miles.

This summer I hiked to the Sierra Nevada mountains with my dad. It is located in California. I saw the biggest tree in the world! It is famous. We parked next to a sign that showed us the trails and the miles it takes to get where we wanted to go. We hiked 42 miles to Kaweah Gap.

We camped at three different sites: Panther Creek, Buck Canyon, and Hamilton Lake. We ate trail mix, dried mangos, oatmeal and lots of coffee. The last morning I was there I had only two almonds left to eat, and I drank a ton of coffee.

I had a lot of fun!

  24. Hi! My name is Peach.

This summer I went to Lake of the Woods with my mom, dad and brother. We went swimming and fishing all day. My brother caught a little bass fish. I thought it was so cute! We had a picnic with sandwiches, cookies, and chips. We were going to go on a boat, but it was really windy and the waves were too choppy. We stayed all day long and left around six.

The drive to get there was really long, but it was really pretty. We had a really great time!

  25. Hello! My name is Poppy.

This summer I went to Ohio to see my dad's family. We did lots of things including going to a Reds baseball game, driving all the way to Chincoteague in Virginia, and we also went to a horse show. I went to the horse show with my cousin, Lauren. Most everything had been canceled by the rain, so it was pretty boring. They just ended up doing equitation, which is when they walk-trot and canter the horse around. There is a judge that scores the rider on how well they can ride and control the horse.

After the horse show we went to Lauren's barn and I got to meet her horses. One of my favorite horses was named Fyre. He was an Arabian Gelding. He was dark bay in color, which means he was a really dark brown with a black mane and tail.

I had a great time seeing all of the horses.

  26. Hi! My name is Sayler.

This summer I backpacked with my best friend Joe to the Heavenly Twin Lakes. It was a four hour trip in total to get there by car and foot. When we got there we found a really nice spot on the lake, and it had a campfire. We fished a little bit after we set up camp. After that we had hotdogs, wheat thins, and cola for dinner. We had brought some cookies and had those for dessert. There were a ton of mosquitos, and when we "hooed" they would all go onto the water. We think they were scared that we may have been owls. We went to bed around ten, but we played cards in the tent for a little while before going to sleep.

We got up in the morning around seven. We had oatmeal and hot chocolate for breakfast. We packed up our campsite and left around ten or eleven. We went to Lake of the Woods and had lunch at the resort. Then we went to Howard Prairie and dropped me off with my family to spend the rest of the weekend camping with them.

I got to go wakeboarding behind my family friends' boat and I stayed up the longest I have ever done. I was the only one that got up, and it made me so happy. I had a great weekend!

  27. Hello! My name is Skylar.

This summer I went to live with my dad for those three months and I went horseback riding in Redding, California. We drove there from Ashland, and it was a very long trip. The horses are at my dad's house, and I get to ride them whenever I go visit him. Sienna and Willow are the horse's names. Willow was an abused horse and my grandma adopted him. He is a white grey color. My dad tried to ride him and he just stood still and refused to move. He moves for me though and doesn't mind if I am riding him. He is a good horse, but hates his ears being touched. We think that he was abused a lot on his ears. He doesn't mind if I touch his ears though because I am very gentle with him. I love Willow. I have taught him a lot about being ridden and listening and we have a very special bond.

Sienna is the brown and white

  28. Hello! My name is Skylar.

This summer I went to Redding, California to live with my dad for the summer. I get to visit my horses and ride them while I am there. We have two horses, Willow and Sienna. Willow was an abused horse and we rescued him. My dad tried to ride him and he refused to move. He likes it when I ride him though, and doesn't mind when kids are on him. He is a very good horse, but hates having his ears touched. We think that he was abused a lot around and on his ears. I touch his ears very gently while I am putting on his harness and he doesn't mind.

When I first tried to ride him I got thrown onto the ground and bruises were everywhere. I gave him two weeks and tried it again. This time he let me stay on, but he was very stubborn. They call it "barn stubborn" when a horse refuses to do as he is commanded. I stayed firm though and kept trying, and eventually he got it.

He is now an amazing horse, and we have a great bond with each other. I had a wonderful summer at my dad's place.
